Wrath of the Titans (2012) ✰ ✰

This thoroughly unnecessary sequel to the thoroughly unnecessary remake of the 1981 thoroughly unnecessary original is a passable time filler if one has any interest in its mythology or its movie stars.  Some of the stars, like Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes, are actually given a little more to do this time around, and I would enjoy watching Rosamund Pike under just about any circumstances.  But it is difficult to review or recommend something like this that is just so full of utter nonsense.

The one thing that Jonathan Liebesman’s film has going for it is humor.  I don’t remember the 2010 Clash of the Titans delivering many laughs, but this one sort of embraces the funny side of gods destroying our earthly realm, especially involving the characters of Agenor (Toby Kebbell) and Hephaestus (Bill Nighy).  They kept me interested even while my limited memory of the mythology kept calling things into question and my eyes kept rolling at the interminable CGI effects.

It is difficult for me to believe that there are or will be fans who actually take this sort of movie seriously, even while history teaches that every movie ever made has its passionate defenders.  I was restless much of the time and bored once in a while, though the film tries very hard to entertain.  I guess the fantasy it represents, like the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings series, just isn’t my cup of tea.  Enjoy it if you can.  ✰ ✰.  3 April 2012.
